Life Project 4 Youth (LP4Y)
Think Human Fund
Mission & History
LP4Y is an international movement of local organisations specializing in the development of innovative solutions for the professional and social integration of excluded Youth living in extreme poverty. For 15 years, LP4Y’s structure has facilitated the sharing of practices among
diverse stakeholders, ensuring consistent and meaningful
actions. By fostering collaboration and advocating for inclusion, LP4Y creates pathways towards a more
inclusive world.
LP4Y’s mission includes:
1. Accompany the most excluded Youth in Asia and the Middle-East towards their professional and social integration
2. Campaign with Young adults coming from extreme poverty to offer concrete, grassroots solutions addressing exclusion issues
3. Engage with partners to increase the number of initiatives that support Youth inclusion and multiply the impact
Country Information
Indonesia, with over 280 million people, is the fourth most populous country, with 16% aged 15-24. Poverty affects youth significantly; among 46 million young people aged 15-24, about 23%—or 10 million—are out of school, employment, or training.
Climate change further exacerbates their challenges. Rural areas, home to nearly 55% of the population, face high climatic risks. Rising sea levels threaten northern Jakarta and Surabaya, where LP4Y centers are located. The slum population increased from 22% in 2014 to 31% in 2018, highlighting the growing economic and social inequalities exacerbated by environmental threats.
The Need
Young people in Indonesia face alarming unemployment rates, with 26.12% of those aged 15-19 and 15.64% of those aged 20-24 unemployed in 2019. These figures have worsened to 24.34% and 18.71%, respectively. Many work in the informal economy—like street vendors and waste pickers—earning little and lacking legal protections.
Social and economic inequalities, compounded by climate change, disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.
The Project We Fund
The project operates in North Jakarta’s Cilincing area, a once-vibrant coastal district now plagued by pollution and slums from port expansion. Previously known as “Palm Beach,” Cilincing faces issues like rising prostitution, with many residents working as fishermen, scavengers, or in coal factories.
LP4Y aims to reduce the socio-economic ]gap by accompanying Youth to secure decent jobs and become active, responsible citizens. The program also promotes best practices in Youth inclusion and engages in
broader national and international
discussions.
The micro-activity Care4Change managed by the Youth of the center addresses water issues in Cilincing by providing affordable clean water and educating the community about water health. It also promotes environmental sustainability through initiatives like Sustainable Week, community clean-ups, and advocacy for responsible waste disposal and hygiene practices.
The Result
LP4Y measures impact using Key Impact Indicators (KIIs) such as:
– Youth Follow-Up: Integration rate, attendance, and program completion.
– Partnerships: Professional exposure actions and job placements by partner companies.
– Micro Economic Initiatives
Central to LP4Y’s approach is weekly coaching, tracking improvements in behavior, social skills, and job readiness. After program completion, LP4Y tracks youth through the Central Youth Database to monitor job status and conditions. Alumni can also join the Star Club, which holds monthly dinners with Catalysts for updates on members’ progress.
